Our Engagement Story
4 years ago we got engaged!
Now before we get started with the story I thought I should give a little background on us. My husband and I have been dating since I was 14 and he was 15…Wowza it feels strange to type that out. We are high school sweethearts and have been together since our freshman year! After high school we decided to date long distance in college. Jake played football and ran track at a college in Iowa and I went the social route (shocker!) to a school in Missouri.
Engagement Background
In May 2016, of our senior year of college my family came to Missouri to help celebrate my graduation. About a week and a half after I graduated, my roommates and I did not want to go home and “officially be done” with college. Because of this we planned a float trip with our neighbors for one LAST HOORAH! While planning this trip my Mom was being very strange about wanting me to come home and not go on the trip. My mom was usually go with the flow, but kept saying she wanted to have this “family dinner” on Saturday before my brother went back to Alabama. After much debate and my roommates siding with my mom, I decided to go home. Little DID I KNOW, they were all in on the proposal and Jake was trying to ask me to marry him the same weekend as the FLOAT TRIP… Whoops lol
I said my goodbyes and drove home Friday morning. The important “family dinner” was on Saturday night. Btw, this whole time I STILL had no idea Jake was proposing. I hung out with Jake and my family and everyone was acting normal. All I knew was that we had this nice family dinner…
ENGAGEMENT DAY
You are thinking, Come on Madi, this is the part we have been waiting for!
Saturday morning, the day started like any other. That afternoon my Dad asked if my sister and myself would go drop something off for the Football Coach at our high school before dinner. We agreed, got ready, and headed to the high school. Jake said he had to go home to shower so would meet us at the restaurant. My sister (the proposal accomplice) drove to our high school and at this point, I still had NO IDEA. We pulled up to the track and my sister said “ I think Coach Wilson is in the field house." At that time I thought that was weird, but again started to walk out onto the field. That’s when I knew we weren’t dropping off something for the football coach anymore..
I saw Jake standing in the middle of our high school football field. After I walked out onto the field to meet him (in what felt like the longest walk ever) I gave Jake a hug and knew this was the day he was going to ask me to be his wife. There was a blanket in the middle of the field for us to sit on and it had some of my favorite candies and drinks. He then sat me down and asked me to watch a video on the laptop. This is when the Tears started flowing..
The video was of all our close friends and family sending us congratulations and well wishes. The song in the background was “Marry You” by Bruno Mars. A lot of the videos made me laugh, some made me cry, but the thing in common was everyone kept telling me to “JUST SAY YES!” At this point the light bulb clicked: Everyone was in on this except me! The wanting me to come home, my roommates siding with my mom, the cancelled float trip, they were all helping Jake for this moment!!
Jake then took a ring box out, took my hand, and asked me to be his wife. I cried, gave him a hug and kiss and of course I said YES!!
One of the happiest days of my life knowing that I get to spend it with my best friend.
After the proposal it was time to celebrate with some champagne. Shout out to my sister for taking all of the videos and photos!
Our engagement day was so special for us. Jake asked me to marry him in the very same place that we met many years ago. After the proposal my sister, Jake, and I headed to the restaurant so we could finally have our “family dinner.” When we got there, Jake and I’s family gave lots of hugs and were so happy for us! I I then texted all of my friends and family who were waiting for me to tell them “We’re engaged!”
Thank you to everyone who helped makes this surprise come to life! 4 years ago has gone too quick! Many moves, job changes, and fun memories, there is no one else I would rather go through life with.
Cheers to now and forever! The Stacys
